🔑 API Key Setup

PromptCue is designed to let you dive right in—no registration needed. To start chatting with our powerful suite of AI models, all you need is a valid API key from your chosen provider. Follow these simple steps to set up your API key and unlock PromptCue's full potential.

Step 1: Obtain Your API Key​

Each AI model provider (such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, etc.) issues its own API key. Here’s what you need to know:

  • OpenAI Models:
    Use the API key from OpenAI to access models like GPT-4, GPT-3.5, and more.

  • Anthropic Models:
    Obtain your API key for Claude and other Anthropic models directly from Anthropic.

  • Google Models:
    Get your API key for Gemini and other advanced models directly from Google.

TIP

You only need one API key per provider to access all of its models. For example, if you want to use any of the GPT models, simply enter your OpenAI API key.

Step 2: Enter Your API Key​

Once you have your API key, follow these steps within PromptCue:

1. Select Your AI Model and Compose a Prompt​

  • Choose an AI Model: Navigate the unified interface and select the model you want to use.
  • Type Your Prompt: Enter your question or command in the chat input area.

2. API Key Check & Modal Prompt​

  • Automatic Check: When you try to send your prompt, PromptCue checks if a valid API key is stored in your browser's localStorage.
  • API Key Modal: If no key is found, an API Key modal will automatically appear, prompting you to enter your API key.

3. Enter, Validate & Securely Save Your API Key​

  • Input Your Key: In the modal, enter the API key provided by your AI model provider (such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, etc).
  • Instant Validation: Our system validates the key internally to ensure it’s correct.
  • Encryption & Local Storage:
    For enhanced security, once validated, your API key is sent to our server where it is immediately encrypted. The encrypted key is then returned to your browser and stored in your localStorage.
    • No Server Storage: Your API key is never stored in plaintext on our servers.
    • Client-Side Security: Storing the encrypted key on your device means that even if localStorage is compromised, your API key remains protected.
Key Encryption

To protect your API key, we use industry-standard encryption (AES-GCM with dynamic salts and initialization vectors, along with PBKDF2 for key derivation). This ensures that your API key is securely encrypted before being stored in your browser—and we never store your plaintext key on our servers.

4. Start Prompting​

  • Interact Freely: With your API key in place, you can immediately send your prompt and engage with your chosen AI model.
  • No Additional Sign-Up: Enjoy instant access without the need for any registration.
NOTE

  • API Credits:
    For providers like OpenAI and Anthropic, make sure you have a paid account with sufficient API credits. Remember, an API account is separate from subscription services (such as ChatGPT Plus).

  • Security:
    Your API key is stored locally on your device. Always keep your key confidential and monitor its usage through your provider’s dashboard.

  • Multiple Providers:
    If you plan to use more than one AI model, simply enter one API key per provider.
